CleverView for TCP/IP on Linux: Frequently Asked Questions

CleverView for TCP/IP is a real-time network performance monitor for the TCP/IP transaction environment. It provides critical workload information on such applications as FTP, SMTP, and Telnet, as well as the socket-attached TCP/IP based OLTP environment. Uses for CleverView for TCP/IP include the following:
  • establishing TCP/IP mission critical application service level objectives
  • reporting service level performance on a routine basis
  • identifying the high-demand workload periods
  • trending based on historical data for network response time issues and planning purposes
  • identifying performance bottlenecks before users complain
  • monitoring in real time
  • command submission to the mainframe host(s), as well as sending alerts to the operator console
  • planning for networked mission critical transactions on a proactive basis
CleverView for TCP/IP is designed to help performance analysts, operations personnel, network system programmers, and capacity planners effectively monitor performance, troubleshoot problems, and plan for the future.

Yes. Enterprise Extender Expert shows:

  • Connection status and traffic data for EE Connections
  • Session information about HPR pipes, including current data and connection state, as well as flow and fault information for APPN/HPR Connections
  • Real-time EE UDP workload data for EE assigned port for UDP Port

HPR-EE Alerts focus on the primary indicators of HPR-EE link health: link state availability and the number of active sessions. Alerts for EE Connections include Minimum Active EE Sessions, NLP Retransmits, and Number of SR Retries. Alerts for HPR Connections include Minimum Active LU-LU Sessions, HPR Connection State, and Path Now Switching.

CleverView for TCP/IP provides both Real-Time Packet Tracing and Real-Time Monitoring capabilities. Functions with real-time capabilities include the following:

  • Snapshot – Real-time performance and workload information for applications and clients, in terms of response time for bytes transferred and number of sessions (through the Resource Performance reports: Average Response Time, Network Health, and Packet Performance)
  • LinkView – Real-time Channel Processor Monitoring for TCP/IP
  • Monitor – Real-time,on-line data regarding your operating environment for devices and applications using the MVS TCP/IP address space
  • Buffers – Real-time monitoring of CSM and VTAM buffer status
  • Connect Expert – Real-time UDP data (EE workload for assigned ports and non-EE session connectivity) and real-time monitoring of your sockets and the connectivity to all sessions running over TCP/ IP

 

CleverView for TCP/IP also provides near-time monitoring capabilities. Functions with near-time capabilities include the following:

  • LinkView – Near-time IP throughput information on channel-attached devices (through the Thru24 IP Summary/ Detail reports)
  • Enterprise Extender Expert – Near-time EE throughput information on EE assigned ports (through the Thru24 EE Summary/Detail reports)
History Reports
CleverView for TCP/IP views the TCP/IP network performance from the enterprise level to the remote user connection. Performance indicators are available for workload, usage, and response time. The history reports are available immediately after the Host Monitor is brought up. They include:
  • Buffer
    • CSM – Usage and alerts for CSM buffer pools
    • VTAM – Usage and trends for VTAM buffer pools
  • Expert Reports
    • FTP Expert – Session-based FTP (client or server)
    • TCP Expert – Session-based Socket applications
    • Telnet Expert – Session-based Telnet (client or server)
  • Link Performance
    • Thru99 EE – Interval-based throughput summaries for Enterprise Extender (UDP-based) data traffic by port
    • Thru99 Link – Interval-based throughput summaries for TCP/IP data traffic to/from IP channel links
  • Resource Performance
    • Response Time – Average response times for the test done by the host and on the varying number of bytes sent in the tests set up through the Master workstation
    • Service Level Response Time – Critical resources that have exceeded the user-defined service goal for response time
    • Trace Route – TCP/IP route and segment information
  • Workload
    • Application – Information about applications running on a network, such as Top Number of Bytes and Usage Details
    • Client – Information about clients running on a network, such as Top Number of Bytes and Usage Details
SessionLog Reports
The SessionLog Expert allows viewing of near time or current time sessions, that is, sessions that are either currently active or have recently happened. The definition of "recently" is determined by the installation and is set in the parameters for the FTP or SMF exits. SessionLog requires that the FTP and SMF exits have been previously installed on the host. SessionLog divides data into seven logs under two categories: FTP and TCP.
  • FTP
    • FTP Error Log – Subset of the FTP SMF Log that provides detail on FTP errors
    • FTP Log – Provides details on completed FTPs
    • FTP Server Activity Log – Shows commands entered for completed and in-progress FTPs
  • TCP
    • MQ Log – Defines one or more ports that are being listened on by MQ Series. These ports will be used for selecting MQ session data for reporting purposes
    • TCP Log – Details API sessions that are completed or still active by capturing the initiation and termination events. It includes all socket-attached applications
    • Telnet Log – Shows the details on Telnet sessions that are completed or are still active. Logon and logoff events are captured
    • Websphere Log – Defines one or more ports that are being listened on by WebSphere. These ports will be used for selecting WebSphere session data for reporting purposes
SnapShot Reports
The SnapShot Reports provide data on current activity that has not yet been placed in the VSAM history files. The SnapShot reports are divided into three sections:
  • Workload
